Welcome, Mrs. Hanna Krause's Candy operates in a Gingerbread style house in Paramus, New Jersey & is owned & operated by Ingrid & Karl Krause. The following is a history of the business.
Ingrid's Father, Alfred Krause apprenticed as a candy maker in Germany. At
age 13 he immigrated to the United States and settled in Long Island, New York where his
passion in Candy Making continued. After working long hours at his job he would spend any
spare time he had studying about chocolate and candy making.
In 1929 Alfred and Hanna Krause opened a gas
station in Wyandanch, New York. In addition to selling gasoline they began giving out a
free Lollipop with each purchase of five gallons or more. It wasn't long before customers
started asking to purchase a dozen Lollipops or more for Birthday Parties. Soon, due to
the war and gas rationing the gasoline part of the business began to decline and Hanna and
Alfred closed the gas station & opened a Coffee Shop which offered Homemade Cakes, Ice
Cream & Homemade Candies. They soon found that they were making more money selling
Candy, so they devoted all their time to that confection & Mrs. Hanna Krause's Candy
was born. The Paramus store was opened 39 years ago and has become a Landmark.
Ingrid & Karl operate the store with the
help of their daughter Linda and their grandson Michael, making four generations of candy
makers. Their son Wayne and his wife Gail have their own store in Toms River, New Jersey.
Hanna Krause Candy is known for making candy the old fashioned way, by hand. First we cook the fillings such as caramel, creams, jellies, marzipan, marshmallow & nougat, then the centers are hand rolled, the paper cups are then set out by hand awaiting the finished product. The next day each piece is hand dipped one at a time into a special luscious thick chocolate and placed in a paper cup to await packing, again by hand. This is how our world famous candy has been made for four generations & will be made for generations to come. Call us to arrange for a complete tour of our store and see candy being made.
Hanna Krause also does a lot of company business, which peaks at Valentines Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah & Christmas. We have filled requests from the N.J. Nets, N.Y. Knicks, Giants & Jets as well as many Corporations. When Dan Reeves, former N.Y. Giants Head Coach, was going to Texas for his Daughters wedding, he and his wife, Pat, came to our Paramus store to order wedding favors. They had to be packaged very carefully for the flight to the Southwest on a warm June day.
